Monday 3rd August Broome 2009

Another beautiful day forecasted with a top of 29 deg. However the mornings are quite cold at 12 deg which is quite a shock to the system.

On our way out to Cable Beach we stopped off at the Japanese cemetery which is the resting place for some 900 Japanese divers who lost their lives during the pearling days. It was quite an awesome sight to see all the sandstone rocks hewn into  headstones and inscribed in Japanese.

It was then on to Cable Beach where we headed to the north end as we were able to drive along the hard sand which we did for a couple of Kms before turning back. It would have been possible to have driven much further as the beach is 23 km long. however we just wanted to experience the sand driving which was all quite easy as the route was well defined as a result of the number of 4WD using it, mostly to go fishing along the beach.

We returned to the park and took our chairs and sat in the shade overlooking the beach. We were entertained by a 4WD that had been caught in the rising tide as the driver was launching his boat. He had obviously called for some help but after a few attempts of trying to pull him out  the police finally arrived in a heavy 4wd and winched him free and out of the rising tide which by now had reached half way up his wheels. Here the tide rises very fast as there is a huge tidal range from under 1mtr up to 9mtrs.

In the evening we drove into China town and had a great Thai meal in a very popular restaurant which is renowned for its excellent food which we can concur with.
