An early phone call to arrange our tour out to the Willie Creek Pearl Farm about an hour’s drive out of town.
We then ventured into town to stock up on our provisions which we have to do regularly as we don’t have much space on board Jayco for storage. Sometimes I feel as though we are doing a tour of all the supermarkets around Australia as we have been in that many.
We went back to camp to make our packed lunch and then headed out armed with our map as the pearl farm didn’t register on the Tom Tom.
It was a good hour’s drive heading north up the Cape Leveque road for 23 km which then turned into red dust for another 10km and then across the salt flats following red discs by the roadside until we arrived at the Willie Creek Pearl Farm.
We had made good progress the trip taking just under ¾ hour so we had a bit of time to eat our lunch and have a good drink of water before going out in the hot sun the temp being about 30 deg.
It was a most enjoyable couple of hours learning all about the anatomy of the oyster (not the ones we eat) and how they are seeded and farmed.
It was then into the tinnie where we were very much entertained by our guide whom I’m sure hailed from the east end of London. His humour was good along with all the
information about the creek (or estuary actually) and how the oyster shells are farmed. We then took off for a trip up the estuary where we were fortunate enough to see a couple of sharks in a feeding frenzy chasing a shoal of fish, and then as we entered one of the creeks we saw a very docile crocodile, they have named Gloria, just lazing under the sun on the sand under the mangroves.
She has been spotted going up to Cable Beach and as a result there is talk that she will be trapped and sent to one of the croc farms. With the beautiful birds, Kites, Egrets to name a couple that I can remember, it was great way to see them all in their natural environment. Our jovial cockney took great delight in telling all the wildest stories that he could conjure up about Crocs, sharks etc which highly amused everyone. It was back to the farm where we had some refreshments and an opportunity to visit the showroom.
An Oyster cleaning machine
It was back to the caravan park for our evening nibbles and drinks and preparing our evening meal.
