Today we drove out to Redell Beach near the race course. The tide was still coming in however we were able to drive down on to the beach and park up on the sand. What a hive of activity we found here. On Wednesday it was Ladies Day at the races and this Saturday it’s the Broome Cup which is a very big event on the racing calendar.
So that's why we were lucky enough to see some of these magnificent horses having a swim and a roll in the soft warm sand before being carted off back to the stables no doubt for a good wash and brush down . They and the strappers looked as though they were thoroughly enjoying it all.
We were also quite concerned about a 4wd and trailer that had been left too close to the incoming tide and watched as the water started to envelope the trailer and then the car.
Thankfully some young guys on the beach were able to open the car up and with their 4wd pull it further up the beach, the owners oblivious to it all as no doubt they were still way out fishing. I hope they were able to thank the guys that saved their car as a half hour later it would have been up to the windows. At this stage we also had to back up the beach as the tide had almost reached our front wheels.
By now our attention was focused far out to the horizon where we saw some water spouts and huge splashes as a pod of whales were making their way along the coast line.Unfortunately too far out to get any photos with my snappy little camera.
As our attention was diverted with the whales a lot was happening on the beach some a little bit upsetting; for as we watching a family launch their boat, there was mum holding a little one and dad and friend backing the car down, and getting the boat off the trailer and another little girl, about 4 years old running around near them, when suddenly one of the guys next to us, along with his girlfriend started running and shouting stop! they had seen that the 4 year old had become trapped under the trailer at the waters edge. Luckily the wheels had not gone over her and they were able to pull her out from the sand and water, probably not aware of the danger she had been in as she didn’t cry. How the mother didn’t see her we just don’t know as she was standing right there. However these things can happening in a split second, luckily it all turned out to be alright and they continued to load up and go out on the boat.I’m sure they will be much more careful next time.
The kayaks tour came down and we watched as they were given instructions on how to paddle and get in and out of their kayak before being pulled out to the waters edge and launched into the calm turquoise water. They then paddled out of sight and around the point hopefully adequately covered in sunscreen as it was now getting quite hot.
It was back to our little home which we are now becoming quite use to, to have a shower and get ready to watch the moon rise giving the effect of a’ Staircase to the Moon”when the moons refection across the mud flats looks like steps. This is a well publicised event and can be best seen from the town beach , right where we are located. Hordes of people descended down on to the beach with their chairs, picnic rugs, drinks and eats to set up for the 6.41pm moon rise.
The park next to us had all the different food outlets doing a roaring trade and of course the stalls with the ice cream and the usual bric a brac and jewellery etc.
The time came and alas we were on the wrong side of the point, along with hundreds of others, as the moon rose far over, behind the small headland so we didn’t get to see the reflection on the sand. We decided not to walk round, as tomorrow it would be on again at 7.41pm and this time we will make sure that we will be in the right spot.
We sat down after quite an eventful day to enjoy our dinner sitting outside under our awning, eating our spaghetti dinner along with a few glasses of the finest Western Australian red, all under the glow of the candle lights.
Waiting for nightfall and the moon to rise over the ocean.
