Broome 13th-14th August 2009

Thursday for us was a quiet day where we basically took time out and read our books sitting in the shade on our Town Beach enjoying the days warmth.

We did go into town in the morning to visit the Post Office and buy a few supplies.

In the evening we listened to the radio and had a game of Scrabble, our only regret being that we didn’t bring a dictionary with us to settle those debates you tend to have over some of the words that are attempted!!

Out Tawny Frog Mouth Owl put on a performance most of the night along with the bats that have made their home in the trees around us. We still managed to get a goods night rest though.

Friday 14th

We decided to drive out to Ecobeach about an hour away, 130 kms south of Broome, with only 12 kms of it on red dirt roads.

ECOBEACH BROOME 003

This wilderness resort has only just recently been reopened after being totally destroyed by a cyclone in 2000. It is now a very exclusive resort with a coastline of 15 kms of deserted beaches and rocky headlands.

We ventured out to check out the mini bungle bungles making sure that we weren’t going to be cut off by the rising tide, walking along the beach we waded through the rock pools ,picking up shells of all types and watching all the various creatures popping up out of the sand or scrambling across it. The Jabirus were in abundance along with the wading birds and others that we didn’t know the names of.

We watched the passengers from the luxury Karma IV sailing catamaran jumping out of the tender that had brought to the beach, some with great difficulty as not all of them looked that nimble. Most of them ended up getting wet up to their knees. They had sailed over from Broome which by sea is only 27 nautical miles away, however the crossing does take about 2.5 hours . After we had watched four boat loads being brought to shore we only hoped that they had prepared enough food for us all.

We needn’t have worried as when we finally had changed from our bathers we found ourselves a table in the shade where we could look out across the clear blue ocean as we enjoyed our share of the buffet.

I was tempted to have a swim in the pool but having eaten probably a little too much decided instead to enjoy the warm breeze sitting out on the deck under the shade of the sun sails, watching all the passengers getting wet as they waded out to the tender to take them back out to the catamaran.

We had a great time there, even if it did cost us a few extra dollars!

We set off for the drive back home which seemed to pass much quicker this time as we set the cruise control to 110 kph we seemed to just glide along the mostly deserted roads which had been really well maintained.

Feeling as though a bit of exercise was needed after indulging ourselves with all that food we detoured to Cable Beach to have a swim and to catch the sunset and watch the camels plodding along the beach;  along with many others who had set up their tables and chairs enjoying their the drinks and nibbles.
