Today it was Ladies day at the Broome Turf Club about 5km out of town.
We pulled out our one set of “best’ clothes and took the opportunity to dress up! As we were looking for somewhere to sit in the shade we teamed up with another couple who were staying at the Cable Beach Club having flown up for a weeks holiday and hiring a 4wd to do some touring around on the dirt roads visiting Halls Creek, Fitzroy Crossing and a few of the other popular places. After chatting for awhile we discovered they hailed from Clareville and were both retired . We bet on a few of the races only staking a few dollars on each for a place, winning a first ,a second and a third in different races. Probably lost a few dollars in the end but it was all good fun and the weather was perfect.
We returned back to the caravan and shed our best togs for our less formal wear and went down to the beach and walked out on the mud flats as it was an extreme low tide. We estimated it must have been nearly a 1km to get to the water. As we walked back we watched the sun set in a ball of red as the sky was still filled with smoke from the bush fires still burning north of Broome.
