Broome Saturday 1st August 2009

Being a Saturday meant that it was a market day so we headed off to the largest art and craft markets in the Kimberley held in the court house gardens every weekend.

It was quite a hot day and as usual the sun was beaming down as we looked around the hundred or so stalls of locally made jewellery, nick knacks, hats, beads clothing etc and of course the food stalls and best of all the ice cream stand where we purchased 2 mango cornets which were locally made and were delicious.

We must have spent a good couple of hours walking around  and looking at everything on offer.  I couldn’t resist temptation and purchased another hat as my old white one has almost had its day from the constant battering its been receiving over the last few months. Beatrice was very good and only had the ice cream.

We went back to have a look at the Pearl Luggers and read some of the history of the Pearling industry when Broome was a rip-roaring wild west town, with numerous boarding houses, gambling dens and brothels. The owners of the pearling fleets were Europeans, the shopkeepers  mostly Chinese and the divers mostly Japanese and Aboriginal and the deck hands either Koepangers or Asiatics. In its heyday in the latter part of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th there were up to 400 pearling luggers operating and the population exceeded 4000 people.

Back at the caravan park we had our lunch and then walked the town beach from one end to the other Broome 006looking at the shells, mangroves and the beautiful pindan cliffs right where we are located at the Roebuck Bay Caravan park.
