Friday 10th July Undara and travel to Croydon
Up at 6am for our breakfast with the alarm going off, which really wasn’t necessary as we were already awake as a result of the huge noise the kookaburras were kicking up. We met our tour guide Rob who was taking us to the lava tubes on the 8am tour which was for a couple of hours. Into the bus with another 20 people we headed out into the Undara National Park which can only be entered with a guide. A short ride of 20 minutes and we were making our way into the lava tubes after a rundown of how they had been formed and why there were pockets of rainforest around the place. (They were there as a result of the roof of some sections of the lava tubes having collapsed forming a natural area for a small rainforest to emerge. So much to say it’s impossible to write it all down even if I could remember it all so check out the website.
We packed up on our return to camp and set off for Croydon where we estimated we would arrive just after 3pm, travelling on the bitumen and some single lane roads.
Arrival at Croydon. (Not SE London) Friday 10th July 2009
On arrival we pulled in to the information centre and what luck, we had arrived on their musical and Rodeo 3 day festival which had started that day and was to celebrate 150 years of Queensland being made a state in its own right. The only problem was, was that the caravan park was almost full with all the visitors in town for the event. Luckily we were squeezed into to an area, though it didn’t have any water or power available to it. As we are self sufficient it didn’t worry us so we set up, had short walk around town and then studied the programme of events for the next few days.
Outside the information Centre in Croydon main street.
We missed all the official openings by the Mayor Corrie Pickering and the MP for Mount ISA Betty Kerwin.which had been on earlier in the day. We walked down to the Town Hall for the fancy dress dance at 7pm, the Chinese Dancers and then the fireworks at 8pm and after back to the Town Hall to dance the night away.
We enjoyed the events and had a dance joining the many other visitors from the caravan park and of course the locals who had dressed up in period costume for the event.
