Monday 6th July Mount Granite

006

It’007 s Monday and I’m down to the office to see if our package had arrived. I went up there a few times and still nothing despite the normal mail having been delivered.

Our neighbours Ken & Sheena knowing that we had been camp bound for the last week invited us to join them on a drive up to Mareeba, which we had visited before, however we needed to get out and hope that when we returned our plates would have arrived. We visited the Coffee Works and chocolate factory and enjoyed them both and then looked for somewhere to have our lunch which we had packed.

Not knowing much about the place we headed for Granite Rocks which turned out to be quite a place. We scrambled over the huge granite rocks and walked along the tracks to the Baron River and the swimming holes, where they confirmed that the area was crocodile free. Not having our swimmers we headed back over the granite boulders to see the rock wallabies that were all over the place and very tame. Coming up to be fed they were quite happy to be petted and to sit around and have their photos taken. It wasn’t until we were leaving when Ken asked for a walking map of the area that we found out that this was the only place in Australia where you could be this close to rock wallabies and feed them. They also offered a couple of walks you could do, a long one for $7 and a short one for $5, which we had already done. However we hadn’t seen any signs saying that we should have paid. We enjoyed our lunch with the wallabies looking for scraps of food which we didn’t offer as we thought that a diet of bread, ham and tuna fish wasn’t for them. We enjoyed the company of Ken & Sheena who were settled in at the caravan park for a few months as they both have picked up some local work. They don’t have any time frame and will probably move on in a few months for Darwin, expecting to be away from their home in Freemantle for a couple of years.

Thankfully on our return to the park a note was in the mail slot to say a package had arrived for us. Our plates had arrived, which we will fix on the car in the morning, stay another night and then head out on Wednesday to continue our adventure. It’s all coming together, rear window replaced, new glasses, new number plates and Manly winning their game against the Bulldogs. Life is good! Let’s just hope the cracked windscreen holds up until we get home!
