Cairns Beaches Wednesday 8th July

Sweeping further up north from where we are just out of Cairns a strip of beautiful beaches stretch for 26 kms beyond the Barron River and the cane fields. So we decided they were worth a visit and headed off after breakfast.

Holloways Beach was our first stop where we found a great local family beach and a very nice looking cafe right on the beach.

Our next stop was Yorkeys Knob where we walked along the beach and out on to the rocks. A further drive around the point it also boasts an International Marina which can hold up to 80 visiting yachts, it also has its own boat club and a great bistro and breathtaking views of the Coral Sea. Here we stopped for a drink and took in the atmosphere.

Driving out we headed up to Trinity Beach. Here was an area that over the last few years large apartment buildings have sprung up. Right across the road from the coffee shops and local shops the beach was being well used with life guards on duty as the schools are still on holiday in Queensland.

Moving on we headed for Palm Cove for lunch. What a pearl of a place this is. The cobbled shared road along the beach front is shaded by numerous paper bark trees with palm trees on the beach side. This is a great place, it does have the apartment buildings and the hotels but it has all been kept very low key with the charm of the original buildings being retained. It was a very popular place and the beach was being well used again with the life guards on duty. No real fear of stingers or Crocs here as could be seen by the number of people swimming.

We chose somewhere to eat from the many eateries along the front and then sat out on the tables and enjoyed our seafood lunch and afterwards walked along the beach front under the shade of the trees enjoying the warmth of the day at 28 deg.

With our departure from Cairns tomorrow we made our way back to the caravan park to start tidying up and packing a few things away.
