Kalbarri to Geraldton-6th September

We departed Kalbarri this once quiet fishing village and now a popular tourist and holiday spot and headed for Geraldton. We went off the main highway about 84 km south and drove into Port Gregory a picturesque fishing village that boasted clean safe beaches for bathers and a natural harbour surrounded by a 5km exposed reef ,a large jetty and a water-ski area. Here we stopped for our morning coffee and chatted to one of the local fisherwomen who was checking out the conditions. Plenty of good fishing outside of the reef and the crayfish were the go, however she said said it wasn’t the season right now. We looked out to the deep blue ocean and once again saw the whales blowing as they made their along the coast.

We drove on past the pink lake so called because of the bacteria grown in it which makes it glow as the sun sinks changing it from a mauve or pink to a darker purple. On to Northampton 52 km north of Geraldton which we read was one of the oldest settlements outside of Perth. In 1993 it was classified by the National Trust as a ‘Historic Town’.Today it incorporates agriculture, horticulture crayfishing and tourism.

Here we ate our lunch in the park having walked down the main street checking out the buildings and the old convent which is now a B & B.

We took a detour through Nabawa and then on to into Geraldton where we found the Tarcoola Caravan Park ,situated along  the beach front and just 5 km south of the main town.

Having set up we drove into town to visit the Tourist Information Bureau to pick up all the pamphlets for seeing and what to do for the three days we will spend here.
